WEEKLY MEETING Updates 8/03/09

There was a power outage at Arecibo this week, so SERENDIP Spectrometer was offline for 24 hours. Andrew has restarted the collection code and now the spectrometer is back up and running. Also, he reconfigured the settings so that the power failure resumption condition is to return to the pre-power loss state. So now SERENDIP 5 will automatically start up again after the power is restored. Whenever the power goes out at Arecibo, Luis sends an email to Dan, and to Dan only. We need to think of a way for him to send out notifications to the whole SETI team, so we can avoid future confusions.

Intel has launched a Facebook application that gives you an interface the BOINC Projects you participate in. It allows users, from inside Facebook, to manage their BOINC activity and share their status with other people. Some problems have been noted when trying to get the application to work in Firefox III browser.

Eric is currently working away at the code for the forums, so look out for some changes in the future.
A Scientist from Barcelona who is working on the will be giving a talk on Friday. It has to do with making 3D maps of Stars, and it is a big thing in the European community.

There is a link to the 10 Year Anniversary videos on the SETI@Home homepage. Hopefully a link of the PowerPoint presentations in PDF form will be up soon so viewers at home can take a closer look at the information.

We got one of the new Intel machines mentioned last week up and running as a MySQL replica server. It catches up, post outage, seven times faster than the previous replica. The new replica has a great deal more memory than the old one (64GB vs 24GB) but not as many disk spindles. It might behoove us to add some more disks later.

This new machine will ultimately replace jocelyn, and jocelyn will in turn become the replica.

Dan will be gone for the next few weeks. He’ll vacationing and giving talks at a UC Berkeley-run summer camp.

In a few weeks Jeff will also be gone, off on a trek in Nepal, and doing research for the future YETI@Home project. Oh, and in case you didn't catch it, that last part was a joke.
