WEEKLY MEETING Updates 9/28/09

This week will be a very short science meeting: Dan and Andrew are in South Africa, Jeff is on his vacation, Dave just left for a rehearsal, and Adam is not around. So, it will be a very short and sweet meeting today.

First of all, we did run out of Astropulse data this weekend, but Bob started moving stuff around so we are back up already. We are looking for a new disk to come in from Arecibo.

Matt is still trying to characterize the errors he is getting from his Radar Blanking software. He also noticed this weird effect: when he ran the blanker twice on the same data, the second time it reported half of the radar. The software is still in the works, but hopefully it will under control in the next day or two. Likewise, NITPCkr isn’t running right now, but he’ll try to get it back up after the outage tomorrow.

Bob’s strip charts for mork will hopefully start working after a couple attempts. He has also ordered some new stuff for Dan’s workshop.

Eric is still working on developing Zone RFI rejection. He’s currently planning on doing histograms of zones per hour. The first zones will be ones that are continuous. As of right now, he is just pulling out spikes in the data. But he’ll probably have to go back and pull out things other than spikes-spikes just aren’t what they used to b anymore. Also, Eric has been seeing some pulse periods show up that we want to get rid of. It is interesting to note that what we consider that the “Zones” where RFI are not just defined by time, but can also be defined by periods. Eric is still working on defining that table on the database. All of the Zone RFI work is being done with SETI@Home (mulitbeam) data right now.

No carrier pigeons came in from South Africa, but we did get an email update from Andrew. He wanted to let everyone know that Laura Spitler will be giving a talk on the Serendip project down there in South Africa, and we will be linking to the video of the talk so everyone at home can watch it too. Dan will also be giving a public talk on SETI in South Africa this Monday October 5th. If you're in South Africa, stop by!
Check out Andrew's Blog post for more details.

Also, time cards are early this week! But Jeff has to sign them and, well, he’s in Nepal. Oops.

That’s all for this week from Berkeley!
