Good news for Mac users interested in a SETI@home speed-up: NVIDIA's CUDA system is now functional for MAC. Linux support is coming soon. Update Here.
The National Research Council (NRC) has released a report recommending that “Immediate action is required to ensure the continued operation of the Arecibo Observatory at a level sufficient to maintain and staff the radar facility. NASA and NSF (National Science Foundation) should support a vigorous program of radar observations of NEOs (Near-Earth Objects) at Arecibo…for orbit determination and characterization of physical properties.”
This recommendation is exciting because it means Arecibo may receive more funding, which could lead to more efficient observation.
Dave is heading to the National Cyberinfrastructure Workshop to give a talk about volunteer computing software and its application in BOINC.
Eric will be working on a chapter on SETI@home for the new edition of SETI 2020, as well as a paper for submission to AbSciCon 2010.
Eric is also working on extracting pulses in the SETI@home data to test the most promising spikes. The team needs to filter out Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) to see what parts of the data should get examined more closely, and which are more likely to come from terrestrial sources, such as radio signals.
That's all for now!
